Arrangements are in hand for a rollicking good Great Knaresborough Bed Race, which will be held on Saturday 10 June 2017. All are welcome.
Especially welcome this year are officials from Harrogate Borough Council who, after some discussion, have agreed to waive the newly-proposed hire charge for Conyngham Hall grounds, and to listen to our concerns over the mooted higher licensing costs. Thanks to them more funds will be available for local charities and good causes from the 2017 event.
All proceeds from Bed Race, over and above the cost of staging the event, go to those in most in need in our community. Knaresborough Lions, a volunteer group, organise Bed Race by giving up their spare time. Thanks for the resolution of this costing issue go to councillors, friends of Bed Race and the people of Knaresborough for interceding to keep intact the intrinsic, fun nature of this great community event.
This will be Bed Race number 52 since the event was first held in 1966. It has changed very little and is staged over much the same course through parkland, along Waterside and through the Gorge, up the very steep climb of Castle Ings, around the cobblestones of the market place, back down to High Bridge and finishing with a daunting swim through the usually icy waters of the River Nidd.
As always, the Town of Knaresborough and its spectacular scenery are the true heroes of the event!
